Research Coordinator
The Research Coordinator will facilitate new research initiatives, enable research collaborations, as well as support on-going long-term projects. Included in this role will be organizing workshops on themes relevant to researchers who currently work at the station, and new researchers who might wish to use QUBS for their research. Workshop outcomes could include information exchange, project initiation, grant-writing, data analyses, and writing. The Research Coordinator will produce a quarterly Digital Newsletter for updates on research and publications, facilitate collaborative research and co-supervision of highly qualified personnel (HQP) among faculty, facilitate weekly seminar series, inform users of new data/tools/specimens available, and assist with animal care and scientific permit compliance. The Research Coordinator will also help with supervising summer interns (funded jointly by QUBS and Queen’s) who assist with augmenting GIS data, collecting water chemistry data, and mapping species distributions. The Research Coordinator will report to the Director and work with the QUBS Collections and Data Manager and other QUBS staff to collect and make available the data collected from our network of eight NSERC RTI-funded satellite-linked climate stations. The Research Coordinator will have opportunities to undertake their own research consistent with the mandate of QUBS.
Non-traditional hours, including evening and/or weekend commitments may be required during peak periods (events and conferences, seminars). Ability to reside on-site during peak periods is an asset.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify new funding opportunities appropriate for researchers and research groups at QUBS. Design and implement strategies to increase participation and success rates for identified opportunities.
- Work with existing researchers, and encourage formation of new research teams or groups around identified funding opportunities.
- Provide expert advice and project management services to faculty members and non-academic partners to aid in submission of research funding applications, and assist in editing applications for content, style, and compliance with rules of the funding organizations.
- Organize and help to deliver scientific workshops in collaboration with QUBS researchers.
- Facilitate co-supervision of highly qualified personnel among faculty, and help to supervise summer interns (funded jointly by QUBS and Queen’s) who assist with augmenting GIS, water chemistry, and species distribution data.
- Produce a quarterly Digital Newsletter for updates on research and peer-reviewed publications.
- Assist with weekly seminar series during the active field season by helping to invite and schedule speakers. Other responsibilities will include advertising the seminar series and facilitating speaker visits.
- In consultation with the Director and Senior Manager, advocate for QUBS with funding bodies, sponsors, governments, organizations, and other universities to enhance the research enterprise at QUBS.
- Inform users of new data/tools/specimen collections as they become available.
- Assists with animal care and scientific permit compliance.
- Undertake other duties in support of the department (QUBS) as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctorate in Biology, Geography, Environmental Science or related discipline.
- Grant-writing experience, with greater than 2 years of experience in project management
- Experience in organizing meetings, seminar series, or other events.
- Experience mentoring/supervising students/employees
- Experience working in teams and/or collaborative environments
- Familiarity with Arc GIS (Geographic Information System) an asset.
- Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s license required.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous experience with climate stations or other high frequency monitoring equipment is an asset
- Knowledge of Queen’s University regulations, and protocols and practices applicable to QUBS an asset.
- Able to work on a flexible schedule where required, including weekends and evenings.

- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to oversee varied tasks, prioritize duties, and complete activities in an environment with multiple stakeholders/users and competing interests
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate with a variety of stakeholders/users in a professional, respectful manner, demonstrating tact and diplomacy. Stakeholders/users include: researchers, graduate and undergraduate students from multiple institutions, professors, administrators, alumni, staff, and members of the public.
- Excellent results-oriented project management skills, combined with an ability to manage large projects and an ability to balance competing demands to ensure quality documentation is submitted in accordance with strict and short deadlines.
- Knowledge of computers, and environmental monitoring loggers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to train and motivate others to prepare top quality proposals and adhere to funding agency rules and guidelines.
- Quantitative skills in use of statistical software environments like ‘R’, database software, and GIS an asset
- Ability to understand, interpret and communicate Canadian and international funding agency policies and guidelines.
- Ability to quickly develop a sound knowledge of the university research environment and external research support programs available to Canadian researchers.
